NEWS: Use or transfer travel vouchers before they expire
Northern Territory residents who are 65 years or older are eligible to receive an annual payment of $500 to use for travel, electricity or water.
The payment is available to NT Seniors Recognition Scheme members and recognises the valuable contribution of senior Territorians.
Members who chose to use the payment for travel overseas, interstate or within the Northern Territory will receive vouchers. The vouchers can also be used to travel by vehicle or to bring a family member to the Territory for a visit.
Territory Families has issued about 17,000 travel vouchers, to the value of $4.2 million since 1 July 2018.
Members of the NT Seniors Recognition Scheme who have a 2018-19 travel voucher are reminded to use them before they expire on 30 June 2019.
Unused travel vouchers can be transferred over to members’ water or electricity bill if they are not going to travel before they expire. This must be done by 31 May 2019 by contacting the Scheme on 1800 777 704.
It is important that members use their travel vouchers or transfer them to their electricity or water bill so they can make the most of their benefits, because they cannot be redeemed after 30 June 2019.
Members who are booking their own travel and claiming a reimbursement afterwards, must book and travel by 30 June this year. If members are booking through one of our Approved Vendors, they can travel anytime.
For more information or to change travel payment preferences to electricity and/or water, please contact us or visit a Territory Families shop front located in Casuarina, Palmerston, Katherine, Alice Springs, Nhulunbuy and Tennant Creek.
About the Northern Territory Concession Scheme and Northern Territory Seniors Recognition Scheme
On 1 July 2018, the Northern Territory Government introduced the NT Concession Scheme (NTCS) and NT Seniors Recognition Scheme (NTSRS).
The NT Concession Scheme assists eligible Territorians with the cost of living. The NT Seniors Recognition Scheme recognises the valuable contribution of seniors in the Territory.
Become a member of the new schemes
Senior Territorians who will be 65 years or older this year, may be eligible for both schemes.
To be eligible for both schemes you must be a resident of the Northern Territory and an Australian Citizen or permanent resident.
The NT Concession Scheme is a means-tested scheme supporting eligible Territorians, with the cost of living. To be eligible for the NTCS residents must currently receive a commonwealth benefit including the Age Pension, Disability Support Pension, Carer Payment, Parenting Payment (single) and some Department of Veterans’ Affairs benefits.
The NT Seniors Recognition Scheme acknowledges the valuable contribution seniors make to the NT. All senior Territorians 65 years or older, are eligible for this scheme.
NT residents can apply to become new members of the NT Concession Scheme and NT Seniors Recognition Scheme now.
The new scheme has new cards. The old cards will continue to work under the new scheme. A replacement card will be issued over time.
Optometrists and travel providers
Members of the NT Concession Scheme are eligible to receive a concession on spectacles every two years. Concessions can be provided directly by an approved optometrist at the time of purchase.
Members of the NT Seniors Recognition Scheme can choose to use their payment of up to $500 each year towards the cost of travel in the NT, interstate or overseas. Annual travel vouchers can be redeemed at an approved travel provider when booking fares.
To become an approved vendor, eligible businesses are required to operate under a Code of Practice. These new arrangements promote best practice in service provision including providing value for money and operating in a way that promotes and maintains public confidence in the scheme.
